Tipperary Cup; Portumna Town 6 Templetouhy 1
A Ger Ward hat trick and a Garry Curran hat trick took Portumna Town FC through to the next round of the Tipperary Cup with a big win over Templetuohy.
It was a perfect morning for a match in Town’s ground with Portumna having a full bench to call upon in the second half which kept them in control for most of the game. Templetouhy made the long trip with only one replacement to call upon. However Templetouhy showed their traditional quality game and played football all morning to bring the game to Portumna.
Ger Ward was in top form with good timed runs and chased down every chance that was slotted his way. 14 minutes in Thomas Haugh linked up with him and Ger didn’t hesitate to find the net. Portumna got their second when Ronan O’Meara was taken down in the box on 35 minutes and Garry Curran dispatched the penalty.
Templetouhy were not fazed by the deficit and continuously mounted offensive moves on the Portumna defence with a couple of near misses. They were still very much in the game.
The second half opened with more good attacking play from Portumna and Ger Ward didn’t hang around and grabbed his second on 49 minutes with Thomas Haugh again delivering a ball through to him into the six yard box for him to finish. Portumna had a full bench to work from and started introducing players to keep the tempo up and keep a tight grip on the game.
On 52 minutes Ronan O’Meara, who commanded midfield all morning, was the supplier of a perfect pass forward to Garry Curran to score. Templetouhy got their goal on 73 minutes after forcing Mike Starr to make an excelent save with the resulting corner not being dealt with and the ball came to the edge of the box to be driven to the Portumna net with power.
Ger Ward got his hat trick on 78 minutes with an individual goal passing two defenders and striking into the bottom left corner. Garry Curran then on 82 minutes got his third when John O’Meara drove the ball forward from defence to link with Garry taking it into the box and finishing coolly.
Now it’s on to the next round for Portumna with decent form at present.
